A 66-year-old patient who spent over a month fighting Coronavirus in hospital has been discharged from Royal Derby Hospital.

Brian Billyeald, from Holbrook in Derby, was admitted on 26 March after suffering COVID-19 symptoms. After two days of being cared for on Ward 404, he was then taken to ICU where he spent three weeks being cared for.

A Royal Derby Hospital theatre staff member has been selected as our next ‘Chief Executive Award’ winner.

Theatre Nurse, Alison Clark, was nominated by her colleagues for identifying that the material used by Steris to wrap our instrument trays is the same material that is used to make the disposable hoods that our staff use in theatre and ICU. (Hoods are not part of standard PPE but are worn by some theatre staff for specific operations.)

Burton colleagues' guard of honour as Julie beats COVID-19

A member of staff has become the first patient admitted to Intensive Care at Queen’s Hospital Burton to be discharged after beating COVID-19.

Julie Webb, a member of the Domestic Team, spent 33 days in hospital after being admitted to Intensive Care on 8 April. She was placed into an induced coma and spent 20 days on the unit before being transferred to Ward 20 where she continued her recovery.

Delighted colleagues treat Ann to standing ovation after overcoming COVID-19

A Royal Derby Hospital patient who spent four weeks in intensive care recovering from COVID-19 has thanked the “wonderful” UHDB staff who helped save her life.

Ann West was first admitted to hospital on 23 March after contracting coronavirus, with colleagues on the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Ward 402 working around the clock over the next six weeks to help her overcome the illness.

‘Virtual visiting service’ helping to keep patients in touch with their loved ones

UHDB has introduced a brand new service to help patients stay in contact with their families from their hospital ward while current visiting restrictions are in place because of COVID-19.

The Trust can now arrange for patients to receive a ‘virtual visit’ via video call from their loved ones, or have a written message passed on, to improve their wellbeing and make them feel less isolated.

New prostate cancer procedure is helping to improve radiotherapy patients' quality of life

UHDB is one of only a handful of Trusts in the UK now offering a brand new procedure designed to improve the quality of life of prostate cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy. 

The minimally invasive procedure, known as SpaceOAR Hydrogel, involves a layer of protective gel being inserted between the prostate and the rectum, so as to ensure that the highest dose of radiation is limited to the prostate only.

A relative has praised staff at Royal Derby Hospital for the care provided to her brother, who sadly passed away after contracting Coronavirus.

April Sly, praised Ward 404 for their compassion and thoughtfulness via a Facebook video she uploaded to her page last week.

Nigel, April’s brother, who lived in Cornwall prior to the lockdown, moved to the Midland’s to live with April so she could help support him.

 

Super sewing team donate more than 400 sets of scrubs for #TeamUHDB

A group of almost 1,000 volunteers across Derbyshire and Staffordshire are firing up their sewing machines to provide members of #TeamUHDB with surgical scrubs. The group, called ‘Derby For The Love of Scrubs’, is headed up by Verity Ruane from Allestree, Derby, and has already provided the Trust with 400 sets of scrubs in all sizes, colours and patterns.

Tattoo artist creates stunning tribute to Amged El-Hawrani

A tattoo artist has created a beautiful, bespoke work of art as a tribute to Mr Amged El-Hawrani at Queen’s Hospital Burton. Mr El-Hawrani, who was Associate Clinical Director and Ear, Nose and Throat Consultant here at the Trust, sadly died on 28 March after contracting COVID-19. His colleagues in his department at Queen’s Hospital Burton wanted to pay tribute to him, and after seeing the work of artist Adam Foster on social media, they requested a bespoke piece in his memory.

COVID-19 patients benefit from new use of existing respiratory treatment

The Respiratory Team at Royal Derby Hospital have now discharged nine COVID-19 patients from the wards after been treating with an innovative form of non-invasive ventilation. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) treatment helps to improve the oxygen levels in patients with respiratory failure without the need to invasively ventilate them such as in Intensive Care.
