Tamworth midwives continue providing exceptional care at community centre

The community in Tamworth has banded together to ensure that the Community Midwifery Service in the area can continue to support new and expectant mums and their babies closer to home.

Antenatal and postnatal care is now being provided at the Mile Oak Community Centre, which is located just across the road from Sir Robert Peel Community Hospital, for the foreseeable future.

The service is running seven days a week and the midwives are able to offer a full antenatal care service, as well as postnatal clinics and are able to offer heel prick tests.

Andrea Smith, Senior Community Midwife, said: “As a community team, we really would not be able to provide a service without the generosity of everyone at the Community Centre. The clinics are working well and are very well attended. As a team, we would like to thank them for supporting us.”

Lorraine Purcell, Head of Midwifery, said: “The Trust is adapting the way in which we offer a number of our services due to the COVID-19 pandemic

“We are extremely grateful for the support offered by our friends at Radio Tamworth and the community centre in supporting our dedicated team of midwives to continue to safely offer their services in the community.”

Olivia Shepherd, Chair of the Mile Oak Community Centre, said she was more than happy to help the midwives at this time.

She said: “We’re delighted to be able to offer to help the NHS in this way. It made sense for us to offer our space as the Community Centre has been forced to closed due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Our regulars have been really supportive so we felt like we should use this space to support the midwives.

“My mum works at Sir Robert Peel in surgery, so I’ve got close ties to the NHS, so it’s really nice to be able to help out in this way.

“Plus having to open up the Hall to let the team in in the morning is giving me a reason to get out of bed, too!”
