Trust in the running for two prestigious awards for work on merger

University Hospitals of Derby and Burton has been shortlisted for two national awards for the work undertaken during the recent merger bringing together our trusts in Derby and Burton.

The Trust is the only NHS organisation in the running for the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA) awards in both the Team of the Year and Governance Project of the Year categories.

The ICSA Awards are internationally renowned and aim to recognise and celebrate excellence in governance and annual reporting across the governance profession.

Derby Teaching Hospitals and Burton Hospitals were officially merged on 1 July this year, with the move securing general services at Queen’s Hospital Burton, including A&E, developing more specialised services at the Royal Derby Hospital site and making best use of our community hospitals in Derby, Lichfield and Tamworth.

Other national bodies across the country have since referenced the work undertaken during the merger to aid work in a similar field.

Tosca Fairchild, Director of Governance and Communications at the Trust, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have been nominated for not one, but two awards at such a prestigious ceremony. We submitted two nomination forms for two categories and were shortlisted for both, which is amazing. We are the only NHS organisation to receive any nominations, so to be up there with some really big hitters, FTSE 100 and FTSE 250 companies like Sky, Lloyds Bank and Aviva, is amazing and showcases the talent that we have here in the Trust.”

Nigel Trowbridge, Assistant Trust Secretary and the Trust’s ICSA representative, also expressed his delight at receiving the nominations.

He said: “ICSA is an internationally recognised body highlighting excellence in governance. I look at the companies we’re up there with and I think it really puts our Trust on the map. It would mean the world to win even one award. If we do, you’ll be able to hear the cheers from the ceremony here in Derby and you won’t be able to wipe the smile off my face for weeks!”

Mrs Fairchild added that, should the Trust walk away from the ceremony with any accolades, it would be a reflection on the work carried out by everyone who was involved in the merger of the two Trusts.

She said: “Our merger was unique and involved two teams at Burton and Derby coming together to work from one policy and as one team. This would not have been possible without every single member of the Governance Team.”

The award ceremony takes place at the Hilton on Park Lane, London, on Tuesday, 27 November 2018.
