Derby DrivAbility to host Open Day showcasing adaptations and equipment for disabled drivers and passengers

Part of the Driving Mobility network, Derby DrivAbility will be hosting a free mobility event for healthcare professionals and the public on 14th June 2022.  We will be offering the opportunity for visitors to explore specialist equipment for driving, wheelchair loading and passenger safety.

Derby DrivAbility is a service within the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust and is an accredited Driving Mobility centre. Its Occupational Therapists (OTs) and Approved Driving Instructors (ADIs) provide professional assessments to people who need to gain or retain the ability to drive following a diagnosis involving impairment or disability. Service users can self-refer or are referred by the DVLA, Motability or NHS.

Derby DrivAbility’s Open Day will showcase its services alongside a selection of specialist accessible vehicles and mobility products from experienced and professional suppliers.

Both professional and public visitors will gain valuable knowledge regarding adapted driving and WAVs (wheelchair accessible vehicles) and equipment for travelling safely as a passenger,  either for themselves or for clients. A range of adapted controls and equipment will be on display including left-foot accelerators, steering aids, hand controls, ring accelerators, wheelchair hoists and rotating seats and specialist car seats for children. A selection of specialist manufacturers will also be demonstrating:

  • Drive-from-wheelchair vehicles – Sirus Automotive 
  • Wheelchair accessible vehicles, including the first full 100% electric WAV,
     the Vauxhall Vivaro e – Volta
  • Driving adaptations – Des Gosling Mobility Ltd / NTec Mobility
  • Car boot hoists and person lifts – Autochair
  • Hire services for scooters and wheelchairs – Derby ShopMobility
  • Cycling with a Disability - Cycle Derby
  • Car seats and harnesses for children with additional needs  – Windmill Special Needs
  • There will also be a series of short talks suited to professionals and the general public

Our friendly team will be on hand throughout the day to answer all queries regarding driving with a disability and the assistive products on display. You will be able to find out about the full range of the assessment services we offer and have the opportunity to view adapted vehicles, children’s specialist car seats, mobility scooters and meet and learn about local services such as Cycle Derby and Shopmobility.”
