Joy for UHDB colleague who will volunteer at the Commonwealth Games
A chemotherapy navigator who spends her days helping patients at Queen’s Hospital Burton, will be taking on a new role this Summer as a volunteer at the Commonwealth Games.
Wendy Ballington has been selected from thousands of applicants who offered to help out at the prestigious event, which starts on 28 July, and she couldn’t be happier.
Wendy said: “It is something I am really proud to be a part of. It’s nice to have the chance of being involved in something new”
“I was really hoping I was going to get the email because I wanted to do something for me and I just couldn’t believe it when I was chosen.
“I am so proud I managed to get this far.”
Wendy, who has been working at QHB since November 2009, said she was inspired after going to the Olympics in 2012 and she can’t wait to get started.
She said: “I was lucky enough to get tickets to the Olympics and the atmosphere in the village was fantastic.
“So when I saw this opportunity come up I thought it would be fun.
“I had the interview in September and it was one of the hardest interviews I have ever done, then I found out in February I had been accepted. I was over the moon.
“I have been involved in all sorts of volunteering in the past and present and I currently run a walking group. I like to be kept busy and if I’m helping others it makes me happy.
“This is a once in a lifetime thing to be involved in and I am really looking forward to it.”
Wendy has undertaken training for her role in Information and support, has her rota and is just waiting for her last bit of training before the games commence.
The Commonwealth Games will take place in Birmingham from 28 July until 8 August.
