UHDB wins NHS award for work with Internationally Educated Nurses

UHDB wins Pastoral Care Quality Award

UHDB has won a prestigious award thanks to the efforts of its Learning and Education and Recruitment teams, in recruiting and supporting Internationally Educated Nurses and Midwives.

The teams strive to be the best employer of Internationally Educated Nurses and Midwives and have been awarded the NHS Pastoral Care Quality Award after joining forces to help staff who have joined UHDB from overseas.

The accolade recognises the Trust’s work in international recruitment and “commitment to providing high-quality pastoral care to internationally educated nurses and midwives during recruitment processes and their employment.”

Barbara Day, Head of Learning and Education, who works in collaboration with Pippa Gardiner, Recruitment Manager, said the teams are delighted to shine a spotlight on their hard work.

Barbara said: “We are absolutely delighted that the work that the Learning and Education and Recruitment Teams have done has been recognised at such a high level.

“Being awarded the NHS Pastoral Care Quality Award demonstrates the commitment of UHDB to ensure that our internationally educated nurses and midwives are supported as they become valued members of the nursing community and will be a great incentive for internationally educated professionals to join Team UHDB.

“Whilst we have made significant steps forward in the design of our pastoral support, there are always improvements to be made and we look forward to building on the excellent foundations built so far.  The award raises our national profile in this arena and we are thrilled to be asked to support and advise many other organisations as they continue on their own international recruitment journeys.”

Aldarico Velasco, Digital Nurse Specialist, works closely with Internationally educated nurses and midwives in his role as International Nurse Facilitator.

He said it is important to listen to colleagues and their feedback in order to “bring about significant changes that make a difference.”

Aldarico said: “The award is a recognition of all the important work that we do for our Internationally Educated Nurses and Midwives. We will continue to explore opportunities and listen to our colleagues for their feedback, so we can bring about significant changes that make a difference. As an IEN, I feel immense pride working for UHDB and I’d like to thank everyone for their commitment and support.”

The NHS Pastoral Care Quality Award scheme was launched in March 2022, to help standardise the quality and delivery of pastoral care for Internationally Educated Nurses and Midwives across England to ensure they receive high-quality pastoral support.
