Helen Desmond, Governor

Helen DesmondI work in the operating theatres across the Queen's Hospital Burton sites, as Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) and I'm delighted to be appointed as staff governor, representing the views of my colleagues, patients and local community in this influential space.

In my role as a lead practitioner, I deliver high quality patient-centred care and lead a team to achieve that standard of care - this has been my focus and passion for over 30 years. I function as an advocate - not only for patients, but also for our staff and theatre teams. Supporting colleagues to flourish and grow is a very rewarding part of my role.

As a staff governor, my commitment is to share the views of my colleagues to aid decisions being made for our patients. Sharing staff insight and challenges within our working environment will support improvements and ultimately enhance the standard of care received by our patients.

Alongside my role at UHDB, I volunteer as an NHS ambassador for Inspiring the Future. Attending schools and colleges in the surrounding communities, I share my passion for working in healthcare, discuss the ODP role, and promote the NHS as a career opportunity for young people and inspire the future workforce to have a fulfilling career in the NHS.
