Dermatology consultant Dr Tanya Bleiker awarded prestigious Sir Archibald Gray medal
Congratulations to Dr Tanya Bleiker, dermatology consultant at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton, for being honoured with the Sir Archibald Gray Medal, the highest accolade awarded by the British Association of Dermatology, for her dedication and ongoing service to British Dermatology.
Dr Bleiker, joined the Trust as a consultant dermatologist in 2001, and has been selected for her contribution, and roles as President of the British Association of Dermatologists, editor of the British Journal of Dermatology and editor of the internationally acclaimed Rook's Textbook of Dermatology.
Dr Bleiker's drive and passion for dermatology began as a student when she picked this area to specialist in, she was later appointed as a dermatology registrar in Leicester. She said it was a chance to make a real difference to patients and their quality of life, that inspired her career choice.
She said: "I became a consultant in Derby in 2001 and I have always found that there is a strong ethos here around supporting clinicians and it is an environment in which people thrive, which I wanted to be a part of.
"The positive impact you can make on patients' quality of life by treating their skin disease is the ultimate job satisfaction."
Dr Bleiker said she is honoured to have represented British dermatology in so many ways during her career and is very grateful to her clinical colleagues for providing their support over the years, including her time as president of the British Association of Dermatologists from 2020-2022.
Dr Bleiker said: "Whatever role I have taken on, I have always felt supported and encouraged by my amazing dermatology team and the Trust. UHDB is a Trust that recognises the benefit of clinical roles in the wider NHS and the positive impact these bring to our patients in Derby and Burton.
"I am extremely honoured to have been awarded such a prestigious award and feel quite overwhelmed!"
The Sir Archibald Gray Medal is awarded annually as the British Association of Dermatologists’ highest accolade to an individual for an outstanding contribution and service to British dermatology. The medal, named after the founder of the BAD, for his outstanding work in dermatology, was established in 1963.
Dr Bleiker was awarded the engraved medal by the President of the British Association of Dermatologists at the association's annual meeting on 2 July 2024.
Dr Gisela Robinson, Executive Chief Medical Officer, said it is a privilege to see Dr Bleiker recognised with such a prestigious accolade and on a national scale for her work in this specialty.
Dr Robinson said: "Dr Bleiker has made a significant contribution to the field of Dermatology both at UHDB and further afield. Her knowledge and passion for Dermatology shines through to her colleagues and her patients and this is a great honour in recognition of her ongoing commitment to improving health for those with skin problems.
