Dr Sugunendran named as Diabetes Clinical Champion in the Midlands

Suma Sugunendran

A member of Team UHDB's Diabetes Team has been named as the Diabetes UK Clinical Champion for the Midlands region.

Dr Suma Sugunendran, Assistant Clinical Director of Endocrinology and Diabetes and Clinical Lead for Diabetes at UHDB, will be the Clinical Champion until 2021 after a successful application and interview process.

Dr Sugunendran joined the Royal Derby Hospital as a Consultant in Endocrinology in 2014 and has worked tirelessly to improve the inpatient diabetes service across the Trust, including developing the Type 1 diabetes service in Derby.

Now, in her role as Clinical Champion, Dr Sugunendran aims to to transform outpatient services across hospital and community settings using technology and internet-based solutions. Her work on developing the patient pathways at all five of our sites will also continue as she strives to introduce more technologically advanced solutions to deliver care and a rigid educational programme, specifically tailored to treating patients with diabetes.

The role will also provide Dr Sugunendran with further networking and leadership skills that she can use in her team to help us deliver exceptional care together.
