UHDB consultant's innovative research to help patients with diabetes
A UHDB consultant who wanted to be able to offer access to a lifechanging device for her patients with type 1 diabetes, has contributed to an innovative research study which has been hugely successful.
Emma Wilmot, Consultant Diabetologist, has been heavily involved in designing and delivering a multi-centre randomised controlled trial called Flash UK.
The study, led by Dr Lala Leelarathna from the University of Manchester, focused on the use of the Freestyle Libre 2 glucose monitoring device and showed that the device significantly improved glucose monitoring satisfaction.
As a result of the research, Emma and her fellow peers hope to be able to support more people with type 1 diabetes to be able to access this technology globally.
Emma said the team were delighted to finish the study at the end of last year and she is now author on a paper which has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine, recognised as the world’s leading medical journal and website.
The New England Journal of Medicine delivers high-quality, peer-reviewed research and clinical content to physicians, educators, researchers, and the global medical community.
Emma said: “It has been a pleasure for our team at UHDB to be involved in the delivery of this important clinical trial which will support better access to life changing technology for people living with diabetes.
“This started off as a journey to fill a gap in our evidence base. Flash UK has filled this gap, demonstrating the beneficial impact of flash glucose monitoring on key outcomes in people living with type 1 diabetes.
“This will pave the way to improved access to flash glucose monitoring and it is our hope that everyone with type 1 diabetes will now be able to access this technology.”
A special thanks to those from UHDB who helped deliver the Flash UK study at our sites.
