Your guided tour around our new LRCH palliative care ward
Ward 2 at London Road Community Hospital has now opened as a non-specialist palliative care ward.
Staff on wards can refer their patients to Ward 2 using the white dove icon on the whiteboard and completing the associated referral form.
Staff on the 14 bed ward will be able to provide end of life care, symptom control, syringe driver preparation, as well as family support and discharge planning.
The ward itself is a bright newly refurbished area with access to gardens/courtyard and each room is a single room.
Dr Claudia Whale, Palliative Medicine Consultant, said: “The ward is for patients approaching end of life where there is no option for home, nursing home or an enhanced bed. The success of the ward will be down to identifying the right patients to transfer to us.

"We’ll be attending board rounds and ward MDTs and trying to raise the profile of Ward 2. Please talk to your colleagues about the white dove referral icon on the whiteboard and help to get these patients to the right place for their end of life care.”
The ward will have a Palliative Medicine Consultant responsible for patient care, but without the extensive expertise of a Specialist Palliative Care MDT.
