Your chance to join our fast-moving Pharmacy team in the Surgical Assessment Unit
We’ve been speaking to one of the #UHDBheroes in Pharmacy about why she loves being part of this team, after an exciting new opportunity to join the department opened up this week.
The team are now in the process of looking to recruit an experienced and enthusiastic clinical pharmacist to work in our busy Surgical Assessment Unit (SAU) at Royal Derby Hospital.
SAU acts as the central emergency admissions area for surgery at RDH and works closely with a wide range of different teams – receiving patients from A&E, GPs and our community Out Of Hours providers.
With the vacancy open until Sunday 26 September, there isn’t long to send in your application, so we’ve reached out to a key member of our SAU team, Kayleigh Lehal, Lead Pharmacist, who has told us about her day-to-day experience of working here at UHDB.
What do I do?
“I attend a consultant-led ward round every morning and support the surgical team with prescribing medications and optimising treatment. This is a multidisciplinary ward round consisting of the consultant, junior doctors, nursing staff and myself.
“During this ward round, I make recommendations, interventions and support with the prescribing of urgent medications. Following this, I will review patients individually and complete medications reconciliation on each patient and optimise their treatment plans.”
What do I love about my role?
“The Surgical Assessment Unit at RDH is a busy, complex environment that keeps me on my toes. I love working with the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure the best treatment possible for patients and feel that my contribution is highly valued.
“Being a people’s person, I thoroughly enjoy being surrounded by such a big team and communicating daily with various experts in their areas, such as pain nurses, critical care outreach teams etc. I have become a core part of the Surgical Assessment Unit, which in turn promotes the safe use of medications. Every day on the unit is different and I am forever increasing my knowledge.
“This is the perfect role for somebody who enjoys communicating with others, thinking fast on their feet, loves to promote good practices like antimicrobial stewardship, and overall being a well valued member of a team!”
