Changes to car parking at Royal Derby Hospital from Monday 14 October 2024

The parking rules at Royal Derby Hospital are changing from Monday 14 October as construction work starts on a new multi-storey car park which will create an additional 500 parking spaces for patients and visitors.

The large construction project is expected to take 12 months, during this time, some car parks will be closed so there will be fewer parking spaces available on the hospital site.

Patients and visitors are encouraged to use the new, fully accessible park and ride service which will open on Monday 14 October at Kingsway Boulevard (near Kingsway retail park). It has 365 parking spaces and a free shuttle bus that will drop off and pick up every 20 minutes from five locations around the hospital site.

There are also public transport routes directly into the hospital > and drop off bays located around the site which are free to use for 30 minutes.

If patients and visitors do need to park at the hospital, there will be short stay parking available for visits up to 90 minutes and dedicated Blue Badge car parks with no time restriction.

We understand that sometimes patients and visitors may need to park on site for longer than 90 minutes for reasons outside of their control such as an emergency, appointment delay, supporting a loved one, or pregnant people accessing maternity services. We have a process in place to support you, and if this happens, you will not be charged extra, so please speak to a member of staff who will be able to help you.

Andrew Selby, Director of Estates and Facilities said: "We really appreciate our patients and visitors working with us, we know that changing the parking rules will cause a mild disruption but the multi-storey car park will give us an additional 500 car parking spaces, addressing feedback from our communities and providing a better experience to everyone who visits our hospital.

"While we safely complete the construction, there will be fewer onsite spaces available so we are asking visitors to utilise the free park and ride, drop off bays or public transport to keep the onsite parking for people who really need it."

Park and ride from Kingsway Boulevard

A fully accessible park and ride service will be available for patients and visitors from Kingsway Boulevard (off the Kingsway Island, near the retail park). It will operate seven days a week and stop at five points around the hospital site from 8.15am - 5.40pm. A full bus timetable is available to download and, when the service launches on Monday 14 October you can track the Royal Derby Hospital shuttle bus live on the Diamond Bus website. Access Diamond Buses website (opens in new window) >

The park and ride access route is clearly signposted with yellow signs. Download the park and ride access route map, with driving instructions (opens in new window) >

How will it impact patients and visitors?

Here are some scenarios to demonstrate how the parking rules will work:

  • For routine or planned appointments, or visiting an inpatient
If you park on-site, you will need to follow the new parking rules or utilise the accessible park and ride. If your visit unexpectedly exceeds 90 minutes because of reasons including you have been admitted, supporting a loved one, clinics were running late, or a bereavement, please talk to a member of staff.

  • Accessing an urgent or emergency care pathway
It is likely that your stay will be over 90 minutes so where possible, please arrange to be dropped off. If you park on-site and your stay exceeds 90 minutes, please talk to a member of staff.

  • Pregnant people who are in labour and birthing partners
If you are in labour, please park in an appropriate space and speak to maternity staff. You are permitted to park on-site for longer than 90 minutes.
