Jane Haslam, UHDB Director of Midwifery & Divisional Director of Nursing, will be retiring this September following a 38-year career spent caring for people in our hospitals.

Jane has played a pivotal role in the lives of countless numbers of patients over the last four decades or so, since first joining the Trust back in 1982 as a nurse.

It is in her capacity as a midwife that she has made such a difference to our Trust however, with Jane serving as Head of Midwifery for a number of years before then becoming our Director of Midwifery in 2018, following the creation of UHDB.

Jane will be retiring and returning part-time from September as the Lead Midwife for CNST (Clinical Negligence Scheme for Trusts), which handles all clinical negligence claims against member NHS bodies, on behalf of NHS Resolution.

Susan Whale, Divisional Director of Women’s and Children’s Services, said: “Jane has made an immense contribution to our Trust and will have left an indelible mark on the lives of thousands of families over the years.

"We are extremely proud of the high standards of care we are able to offer to women and their babies across our hospitals and Jane has undoubtedly played a central role in helping us to grow this valuable service throughout her time at the Trust."

Patricia Paine has been appointed as UHDB’s next Director of Midwifery and will start in the role from 17 August, having worked in Saudi Arabia as an Assistant Chief Nurse since 2015.

She also previously held the positions of Head of Midwifery and then Divisional Director of Nursing and Midwifery at Worcester Acute Hospitals, between 2009 and 2015.

Susan added: “We are absolutely delighted that Patricia has agreed to become our new Director of Midwifery.

"Patricia’s experience and track record for placing excellence and compassion at the centre of patient care made her an outstanding candidate for the role and we look forward to welcoming her to UHDB.”
