NHS Confederation CEO visits 'inspiring' and 'innovative' teams across UHDB
University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust (UHDB) hosted a visit by Matthew Taylor, Chief Executive of NHS Confederation, who met nationally recognised teams and praised the innovation on display during his time at Royal Derby Hospital (RDH).
Last month, Matthew Taylor met colleagues at the King's Treatment Centre (KTC) Elective Hub following a substantial investment to support elective recovery, saw firsthand the award nominated Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) service who are supporting reducing pressures in the Trust's Emergency department, and met with leaders who have completed UHDB's Compassionate and Inclusive Leadership Programme aimed at delivering exceptional leadership to create a better place to work and better outcomes for the people we care for.
Matthew Taylor said of the visit: "I'm incredibly grateful to everyone who took the time to meet me and tell me about the services they provide.
"Like all trusts, Derby and Burton faces challenges managing demand and financial pressures, but I was inspired by how the Trust is facing them through things like the Same Day Emergency Care service, the new elective hub and compassionate and inclusive leadership course.
"Thank you to everyone at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust."
You can watch Matthew reflect on his visit here:
Throughout Matthew's visit to the KTC Elective Hub at RDH, he saw how following a £10million investment to support elective recovery there had been a redesigned and improved patient pathway around admission and discharge processes and flow. This supports UHDB to protect elective activity all year round for a range of surgical specialities and will mean we are able to treat an additional 2,500 patients each year.
UHDB's double award nominated SDEC team > (opens in new window), demonstrated their work in improving patient care and outcomes for urgent and emergency care patients and reducing operational pressures throughout the Trust. Seeing on average 100 patients a day, the work has supported reducing the average time patients spend in the Emergency department - with the team bringing 61% of medical SDEC patients in to SDEC within four hours compared with 26% for the previous year. This is particularly important during winter, when services are under more pressure than usual from increased patient visits, admissions and managing planned care.
During the end of the visit, Amanda Rawlings, Chief People Officer at UHDB, and several colleagues from the early cohorts of the Compassionate and Inclusive Leadership Programme, discussed the programme along with how it is being rolled out to hundreds of leaders across UHDB providing a useful framework. The programme has several strands, from the development of a framework for quality improvement, to a formal leadership programme and aims to ensure that the culture we lead aligns with the values we sign up to when we work for UHDB and the NHS.
Prem Singh, Chair at UHDB, and Stephen Posey, Chief Executive at UHDB, met with Matthew Taylor during his visit.
Stephen welcomed the opportunity to showcase work underway at UHDB. "As a Trust we serve a population of more than a million people and despite the demands on our services, our teams are thinking really proactively about how they can improve what we do to deliver higher quality, more efficient and effective care.
"It remains challenging, but we were proud to showcase some of the work our teams have been doing - like in same day emergency care services and in our new surgery centre - that is helping to improve patient experience and reduce our waiting times in emergency and planned care. We know these are some of the things that really matter to our patients.
"We also know that we need to look after our people if we are going to meet the challenges ahead and deliver the continued improvements we want to, so it was a pleasure to introduce the NHS Confederation team to a wide group of leaders on our Compassionate and Inclusive Leadership Programme - a programme unique to UHDB that is really focusing on setting the right culture, mindset and improvement approach to help deliver our goals together."
Prem said: "It was a pleasure to share some of the outstanding work taking place at UHDB with Matthew. The desire, hard work and drive for improvement shone through with every team we met, and I am delighted we were able to demonstrate our work to NHS Confederation."
