The Eye Outpatients team at Royal Derby Hospital have been awarded with an award from the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) for their work supporting patients during the pandemic.

The team are one of 20 award recipients from the RCN’s Derbyshire Branch who have been chosen to receive a commemorative certificate and thank you gifts, and forms part of the celebration of the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife.

Throughout the pandemic, the team have continued to provide a service to patients to ensure their vision did not deteriorate or conditions worsen. Members of the team were also redeployed to other areas of the Trust to support the response to Covid-19.

Jacqueline Browne, Nurse Specialist, nominated the team for the award and was thrilled to hear they had been chosen as winners.

She said: “We had staff redeployed to areas such as Intensive Care, but it’s also been so important for us to be able to keep our service running.

“It’s been challenging but everyone has done such an incredible job, and this will be a real boost for everyone.”

Senior Sister, Paramjit Kaur, also praised the work of the team over the course of the year:

“The team has been tremendous. We’ve had a really tough year, as has everyone else, but everyone has been so resilient and flexible. I can’t fault them.

“We have continued to treat patients for sight-threatening conditions throughout the pandemic, have had to change the way we work across sites, so it’s been a real team effort.”
