Fantastic new birthing pool facility opens at QHB for mums-to-be
Mums-to-be in communities around Burton and Derbyshire can now have their baby in a new birthing pool room, which has opened at Queen’s Hospital Burton.
The cutting-edge facility features a fully accessible ergonomic pool, welcoming décor and dimmable LED lighting to help give parents the most relaxing experience possible.
The pool suite, which was funded by Derby & Burton Hospitals Charity has been installed thanks to supporters of the charity.
To complete the project and further enhance the experience offered to parents and their birthing partners during labour, the charity also raised funds to supplement the new pool birth suite with comfortable seating, ambient lighting, and calming décor.
Clare Pugh, Senior Midwife at Queen’s Hospital Burton said it enhances the services for the growing number of mums-to-be, who are choosing water as their primary pain relief when giving birth.
She said: “This is a beautiful big space that allows midwives and birthing partners to have better access around the pool and it really enhances the treatment we can provide. Watching those babies being born under water is a magical experience and a joy to watch.”
In total, £40,000 was raised for the suite, thanks to the support of generous local fundraisers such as Ed Clamp, who completed a gruelling 15-hour triathlon to raise cash.
Ed, who is a father-of-three took on the Triathlon challenge to help support the appeal, after his twins Benjamin and Zachary were born in Burton, prematurely.
Ed said: “Zachary was born floppy and unresponsive and needed oxygen initially but was fine after some support. He had issues with his blood sugars most of his first day but was given the all-clear on day three. He really is a fighter.”
Ed, who described the triathlon as the hardest thing he has ever done, said he wanted to give something back to the hospital.
He said: “I wanted to fundraise for the hospital to give something back as it was a truly unbelievable experience, and it is magical to have everyone home safely.
“The team at Burton truly are lifesaving angels. They work with a clarity of thought under pressure I can only ever dream of having. They communicate excellently to the family, and they only have the wellbeing of everyone in their minds.”
