Former Domestic Services Worker starts role as Apprentice Healthcare Assistant

Natasha Jameson

A Domestic Worker who believed she could give more to the NHS has started her journey towards becoming a fully qualified Healthcare Assistant.

Natasha Jameson, 25 from Burton-on-Trent started her NHS journey in 2014 as an evening Domestic Worker.

“As soon as I started working in the NHS, I knew it was the right place for me. – I enjoyed the environment and being around the staff and patients. I absolutely loved the cleaning and my domestic role, however I wanted to give more.”

After working as a Domestic for a couple of years, Natasha moved on to work in the Pharmacy Manufacturing Unit at Queen’s Hospital Burton where she was taken on as a Pharmacy Assistant; here she completed her NVQ Level 2 in Performing Manufacturing Operations.

Once Natasha had completed the NVQ, she was looking for further responsibilities within her role in Pharmacy, unfortunately there wasn’t much available at the time, so Natasha had a chat with her manager about a Clinical Apprenticeship vacancy she had seen advertised – her manager encouraged her to GO FOR IT!

Natasha was successful in applying for the apprenticeship and sailed through the interview with flying colours. She officially started her apprenticeship journey on Monday, 3 February, the first day of National Apprenticeship Week.

Natasha’s placement will be on Ward 30 which specialises in Gynae patients.

“This apprenticeship and being in the NHS is perfect for me. I am so grateful for all the experience it is exposing me to – every day I come away from work having learnt something different – it keeps your brain going!”

“If anyone was considering an apprenticeship, I’d say DO IT! The training is free, but you’re also getting paid to complete a qualification! Working within the hospital has opened so many doors for me.”

“I feel really proud of myself. You know there’s that saying “there’s no such thing as can’t” – it’s true! I sometimes used to think “I won’t be able to do that” or “That looks quite difficult”, but with the right support and the right mind-set, you can do anything you want to!”
