A Healthcare Assistant (HCA) at Royal Derby Hospital's Medical Assessment Unit (MAU) has been described as "an asset to the ward" following glowing feedback from the relatives of an elderly patient.

Amy Howe was singled out by the patient's daughter, who described Amy as "friendly, helpful, and very caring", stating that she helped to brighten her mother's day.

Colleagues from MAU joined in to heap praise on Amy for everything she does to make a difference to patients on a daily basis - with her efforts rewarded as she was presented with our latest Excellent Employee Monthly Making a Difference Award.

Deputy Chief Operating Officer, Raman Chhokar, presenting Amy Howe with her Making a Difference Award. In their nomination, the patient's relative went on to say: "I met Amy as she came to re-position my mother and she was bubbly, approachable, and very friendly.

"She had time for us and was truly caring and an asset to your ward. I have met many nurses and healthcare workers in my time on wards, but Amy stands out a mile as a special and outstanding care giver.

"Thank you Amy - you’re a star and I’m very grateful for your hard work."

A tearful Amy thanked all of her colleagues for their support, and the patient and their relative for their nomination, adding that she was incredibly surprised to find out that her colleagues had come together on the Unit to congratulate her.

Amy, who has worked on MAU for four years, continued: "I was a bit emotional as I'm not the best with things like this! This is such a nice thing to receive and I'm so grateful.

"I'd also like to thank the patient and their family for their kind words and I'm really glad that I could make their stay on MAU the best it could have been."

Amy Frost, former Senior Sister on MAU who has since moved to Ward 303 as Interim Senior Sister, also shared some heartwarming words with Amy after she was presented with her award, stating:

"I am really proud of you and you thoroughly deserve this award. If any of us or our relatives needed care in our hospital, you are the person we would want to be delivering that care - you are amazing."

Deputy Chief Operating Officer, Raman Chhokar, joined Amy's colleagues to surprise her by presenting her with the Excellent Employee Monthly Making a Difference Award, adding that it was a pleasure to be able to recognise her compassion.

Raman said: "All of your colleagues have said wonderful things to me about you, so I just want to echo their words and thank you for the great care you give to our patients - and also for being an amazing colleague to everyone in this room.

"It really shows the impact of the work you do when you look around to see all of these people who wanted to come together to celebrate you, Amy, so on behalf of everyone on MAU and across the Trust, thank you for all you do."
