‘Herculean efforts’ of #TeamUHDB heroes honoured at MADA

UHDB Virtual Awards winners

We celebrated some of our #TeamUHDB heroes of the pandemic last night as part of our first ever virtual annual awards.

Our teams have all been truly inspirational during this toughest of years for the NHS – so it was fantastic to be able to honour the priceless contributions they’ve made at this year’s Making a Difference Awards.

In total, 15 awards were presented during the virtual ceremony, which was live streamed across social media, although countless more could have been handed out to our extraordinary colleagues for the role they’ve all played during the pandemic.

The outstanding Infection Prevention and Control team won the ‘Chair’s Team of the Year Award’, in recognition for the way they have relentlessly “immersed themselves in all things Covid-19” to keep our hospitals as safe as possible by limiting the spread of the virus.

After the year we’ve had, the UHDB judges were unable to select just one winner of the ‘Outstanding Contribution Award’ this year; instead electing to pick three winning teams: ICU, Respiratory and Theatres.

All three teams across our Derby and Burton sites have been magnificent throughout the pandemic and have all made life-saving contributions to patients with Covid-19 and other serious conditions, whilst managing unprecedented levels of pressure at the same time.

Meanwhile, the start of the pandemic saw huge changes to our Children’s services, with the QHB Paediatrics team at QHB temporarily relocating to Derbyshire Children’s Hospital to join the Derby team.

Both teams adapted superbly to this challenge; working together to ensure the Trust was able to provide quality care safely to children across Derbyshire and Staffordshire, and so thoroughly deserved the CEO Award for their efforts.

Gavin Boyle, Chief Executive at UHDB, said: “The last year has been the most challenging period in the NHS’ long history but through it all, our UHDB colleagues have continued to show unwavering commitment to our patients. It has been truly inspiring to witness the lengths our people have gone to, day in and day out, to care for our patients and each other, despite the fears they will have undoubtedly felt for themselves and their families.

“Our colleagues across our five hospitals, as well as our people working at other non-UHDB sites in the community across Derbyshire, have all played a significant role in the ongoing response to the pandemic, and I am immensely proud of each and every one of them. This year, we’ve been keen to find all manner of ways to say a big thank you to all of our teams and to recognise their herculean efforts. As part of this, I am absolutely delighted that we’ve been able to celebrate some of our teams at our annual Making a Difference Awards.

“The impact of the pandemic sadly meant that we had to postpone last year’s awards, but it was fantastic to be able to once again celebrate some hugely deserving teams at our awards last night, even if it was through a computer screen and not in person! Despite Covid-19 restrictions being lifted in the wider community, Hands, Face, Space rules haven’t changed in our hospitals, so this year’s awards were held virtually for the first time ever and I’d like to thank everyone who tuned in.

“Most importantly though, I want to congratulate and say thank you to all of the incredible colleagues and teams who were shortlisted and indeed all of my colleagues at UHDB. Each and every one of you are winners in my eyes and should feel extremely proud of the way you have responded to the challenges of the pandemic.”
