New multi-storey car park opens its barriers at Queen’s Hospital Burton
The new multi-storey car park at Queen’s Hospital Burton has raised its barriers for the first time as it opened to staff today (4 April).
Construction on the facility began in March 2021 and today will be used by UHDB colleagues for the first time. The car park, which is currently being used for staff use only, houses 499 parking spaces, including those behind the on site nursery, and is equipped with 10 electric charging spaces and four motorcycle bays.
As part of ongoing developments, Car Park 5, which has previously been used by staff and patients, has now been converted solely for patient use, thus also improving on-site parking for our communities who visit the hospital. Parking outside of the Treatment Centre was also designated for patient use only in 2021.
A small car park located outside of the Tom Davies House is set to be converted into a dedicated eight-space disabled car park, which has a wheelchair accessible route into the main hospital site. This will open to the public in Summer 2022.
Paul Reed, Head of Capital Projects at UHDB, said: “To build a multi-storey car park on a live hospital site was always going to be a challenge, but this was made considerably easier by everyone involved. Our construction partners, Morgan Sindall, worked incredibly hard to ensure the project did not affect the day to day running of the hospital, but special praise should also be reserved for the Capital Projects, Estates and Facilities teams for all their hard work in taking the project from concept through to reality.
“The building will be a great addition to the site and provide a much-needed facility at the Queen’s Hospital Burton.”
Cathy Winfield, Executive Chief Nurse and Director of Patient Experience, said: “I am delighted to see this car park open and I’m sure will be a hugely valuable asset and help us to alleviate parking issues on and around the site and improve the experience of both our staff and patients who park on the site.
“This development will also contribute to the further development of our plans for the Outwoods village by allowing us to move parking spaces currently located at Outwoods back to the main hospital site. We are continuing to work on with all of our partners on the plans for the Outwoods village, which will focus on preventative care and managing long-term conditions, with the aim of improving the health of the local community.
“This comes in addition to the recent £5 million refurbishment of our Intensive Care Unit, a £2 million upgrade to our Emergency Department and the biggest capital development in over a decade to Queen’s Hospital with the construction of the Treatment Centre extension, which continues to play a vital role in the restoration of our services and tackling our elective backlog following the pandemic.”
Melissa Howe, Facilities General Manager at Queen’s Hospital Burton, added: “The project has been in the offing for so long, but this last year has flown by and now we have this amazing car park that will make such a difference. It has been a pleasure to work with such a wonderful professional team, so my thanks go to everyone involved.”
