New scheme set to benefit AHPs

Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) who have taken a break from practice are set to benefit from a new UHDB scheme that could provide them with the perfect route back into their profession.

UHDB is believed to be the first Trust in the country now offering a Return to Practice programme for trained Radiographers and Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs) who have taken a career break.

Returnees will be assigned a mentor to provide them with any help they need, while the Trust will arrange supervised placements and formal Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to get them back up to speed.

During the 12 month programme, peer support will also be provided to help returning Radiographers and ODPs successfully re-register with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), which will put them in a great position to gain a permanent post at UHDB.

Claire Duckett, Senior Radiographer, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for Radiographers that may have been out of practice for a while. You’d be working with fully qualified staff with experience in all of the modalities in Radiography, who will be able to offer you any advice and guidance.

“We’re very supportive at this Trust and will take you through all of the equipment that you may not be familiar with. You’d be completing a number of competencies as part of the scheme and, towards the end of programme, will be able to apply for HCPC registration and then apply for a substantive post within the Trust.”

There are four vacancies available as part of the Return to Practice scheme, which is initially being trialled for the first time from April 2020, ahead of it potentially being rolled out to more professions across the Trust.

Claire added: “We have a great team here in the UHDB Radiography department. We’re all supportive of each other and, hopefully, as a result of this Return to Practice programme, you’ll be able to join us soon full time!”

Radiography and ODP returnees have until 6 January 2020 to apply for the posts, which you can find out more about here.
