Focus group for patients and families: pain relief experience in Royal Derby Hospital Emergency Department - Thursday 6 March 2025

On Thursday 6 March 2025, UHDB colleagues will be hosting a focus group to allow patients and families to share their experiences of pain relief at our Emergency Department at Royal Derby Hospital.

The focus group invites patients, as well as their family and friends, to be involved in anew project aimed at improving pain relief in the department - directly reflecting on the discussions and feedback shared at the session.

Specialist nurse Gill recognised by 'forever grateful' family for going above and beyond for patient on end-of-life care

A specialist nurse at Royal Derby Hospital who treated a patient before they sadly passed away, received recognition by their family for providing the compassionate care that allowed them to "pass away peacefully and with dignity".

Gill Cook, a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) in Upper Gastrointestinal (known as 'Upper GI') Oncology, first met the patient following their diagnosis of cancer. When the patient's condition deteriorated, she worked tirelessly to move him from A&E to Ward 303 - ensuring he had a private room so his family could be with him in his final moments. Gill stayed late into the evening and went above and beyond to provide additional support to the family, ensuring the patient’s comfort and dignity.

Florence Nightingale Community Hospital's Ward 2 celebrates five years of exceptional care in milestone anniversary of ward's opening

Staff, families, and friends recently gathered to celebrate five years of compassionate care on Ward 2 at Florence Nightingale Community Hospital (FNCH) - a dedicated place to care for patients reaching the end of their lives.

Opened in January 2020, this 14-bed ward has supported over 3,000 patients on end-of-life care and their families, supporting them during the most challenging time. The ward plays a crucial role in the last stages of a patient's life - everyone has the right to a good death, one that is personalised to each patient and respects theirs and their family's wishes.

Temporary relocation of A&E patient waiting room at Queen’s Hospital Burton

The A&E patient waiting room for adults and children at Queen's Hospital Burton (QHB) is temporarily moving while we complete some essential construction work to improve our A&E department. 

From Friday 31 January, the usual waiting room will close and patients who require A&E support will need to book in at the temporary waiting room 'A&E Waiting', located past the Helpdesk, next to WH Smiths in the old blood clinic room.

Temporary relocation of Blood Clinic at Queen's Hospital Burton

The Phlebotomy Clinic (Blood Clinic) at Queen's Hospital Burton has temporarily moved to the old nursery building, behind the Treatment Centre, while we complete some essential building work on the main hospital site.

The nearest car park is car park 1, which includes disabled parking bays, and there is a signposted pedestrian route from the car park to the phlebotomy clinic. You can also use drop-off bays located at the Treatment Centre.

Consultant Hepatologist leads team to win National liver award

A collaborative team that was created to offer holistic care to patients with advanced chronic liver disease, has won a prestigious award. 

Dr Claire Grant, Consultant Hepatologist, created an Advanced Cirrhosis Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) which meets fortnightly to review referred patients who have advanced cirrhosis, a life-threatening condition that results from scarring of the liver.

Digital innovation helps patients access hospital level support at home thanks to virtual ward care

Patients across Derbyshire and East Staffordshire can now receive hospital support while at home through a virtual ward service where patients, who have been assessed face to face by a doctor, are given monitoring equipment to use at home, which allows them to regularly report vital assessments via a digital app to medical and nursing teams based inside the hospital or community.

Poppy appeal at UHDB raises £6050

The Royal British Legion (RBL) Riders Branch came to Royal Derby Hospital (RDH) and Queen's Hospital Burton (QHB) in November collecting for this year's Poppy Appeal.

Players from Derby County Football Club pay special Christmas visit to Royal Derby Hospital

Players and coaching staff from Derby County Football Club brought some festive joy to patients at the Royal Derby Hospital (RDH), as part of their annual Christmas visit.

Derby County's Head Coach, Paul Warne, was joined by members of the men's and women's first team squads as they spent time with patients and their loved ones during their visit to children and adult wards.

Sip Til Send project team celebrates one year of enhanced patient experiences across UHDB

A simple change to how our patients stay hydrated before surgery has helped to transform patient experiences across our hospitals by improving comfort, safety, and clinical outcomes. The project, Sip Til Send, allows patients undergoing a procedure under anaesthetic or sedation to sip up to 170ml of water every hour before they are seen - and has recently celebrated its first year in place at UHDB.
