A collaborative project between the Urology Continence team and the Procurement team to standardise the use of incontinence products across UHDB, aims to improve patient experience by providing maximum comfort and reducing physical issues such as moisture lesions and skin damage, while also saving the Trust significant costs of £31,000 a year.

Will Monaghan, Executive Chief Digital Information Officer at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust (UHDB), has today (Wednesday 21 February) announced that he is taking up a new position as Group Chief Digital Information Officer at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL) and University Hospitals Northamptonshire (UHN) Group.

Information for patients: upcoming industrial action by doctors

Over the coming weeks, some junior doctors across the NHS including those at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton, are planning to take part in strike action.

Some junior doctors will be taking part in industrial action from 7am on Saturday 24 February to 23:59pm on Wednesday 28 February.

UHDB porter shortlisted for national award after helping to save the life of a patient

An ISS porter at our Royal Derby Hospital site, whose quick-thinking and fast actions helped save a patient's life, has been shortlisted as a finalist for the Porter of the Year Award at this year’s National MyPorter Awards, held in association with NHS England.

Dom Attenborough, who was recently presented with a Patient Hero Making a Difference Award for his kindness and compassion when helping a patient and their family, was performing routine checks at the main entrance of Royal Derby Hospital when he was approached by a Security Officer for help with a distressed individual who entered the hospital with life-threatening wounds.

Celebrating National Apprenticeships Week 2024 at UHDB

National Apprenticeships Week takes place this year from Monday 5 - Sunday 11 February 2024, and as this awareness week unfolds, UHDB is proud to celebrate the invaluable contributions of apprentices to our organisation and the healthcare sector at large.

Throughout this week, our Learning & Education team colleagues within People Services have been tirelessly promoting apprenticeships to young people in schools and colleges across our local communities. President of the Royal College of Surgeons of England meets with pioneering surgery teams

The President of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS England) has praised University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust (UHDB) colleagues for a 'thoroughly interesting and enjoyable visit' last month in which he spoke to our leading surgeons and teams, learnt about the strategic investments in our 'impressive portfolio' of state-of-the-art surgical technology and facilities, and discussed the NHS landscape for the surgical profession.

First anniversary celebrations for Ward 5 at Florence Nightingale Community Hospital

Colleagues at a ward established at Florence Nightingale Community Hospital (FNCH) to provide care for those awaiting discharge recently came together to celebrate one year supporting our patients and colleagues.

Ward 5, a 23-bedded ward at the Derby-based community hospital, was set up to support effective patient flow and overall capacity at UHDB and the wider health and social care system within the Midlands - providing care to medically fit patients who no longer require acute hospital care but are yet to be discharged.

In doing so, this frees up valuable bed space at acute hospital sites, helping to maintain the flow of patients across the system - particularly during times of high pressure on NHS services, such as the winter months.

Mum who was diagnosed with cervical cancer urges others to take up screening 'for yourself and your family'

This week (22 January - 28 January) is Cervical Cancer Prevention Week, which aims to raise awareness and increase the number of women getting screened for the preventable disease.  

Cervical screening is a free NHS test that helps to prevent cervical cancer, however in some areas, one in three eligible people across England do not attend when invited to go for screening.

UHDB porter receives special police award for saving lives of members of the public

A porter at UHDB has been presented with a special Derbyshire Constabulary award to commend him after his quick-thinking actions helped to save the lives of members of the public in Derby.

Keith Watson, who typically works in the A&E department at Royal Derby Hospital, was walking his two dogs on the way to care for a relative when he spotted some distressed individuals and acted quickly to ensure their safety.

Dr Kathy McLean OBE has today (9 January) been announced as the new Chair of NHS Derby and Derbyshire Integrated Care Board. The Integrated Care Board (ICB) is responsible for meeting local health needs, managing the local NHS budget, ensuring services are in place to deliver against ambitions and overseeing the delivery of improved outcomes for the population.

Stoma nurse Lisa praised in letter from patient for being their "NHS Angel"

A Stoma Nurse at Royal Derby Hospital has been praised by a patient for being her "NHS Angel" while they undergo extensive treatment for a cancer diagnosis.

In a letter, the patient lauded Lisa Cockram for her holistic support to both themselves as well as their family, amid what they described as "devastating" diagnosis for which they are undergoing extensive treatments and surgeries.

This included following the patient's treatment journey; providing information on support networks and tips on how they can manage their concerns and access resources - including mental health support; and holding difficult yet compassionate conversations with the patient's immediate family, including very young children.
