Play Day 2020: Our Fantastic Play Team

At UHDB, our play workers have gone above and beyond throughout the coronavirus pandemic to ensure that play in our hospitals has still taken place.

As play rooms and patient environments in our hospitals seem very minimalistic at the moment, it is the play team who have an important role to ensure that children and young people still feel comfortable in the hospital environment. Our play workers help to minimise any anxiety or stress a child may have and they provide an outlet to help the child regain confidence and a sense of normality, especially throughout these unprecedented times.

Play activities in the hospital have been altered for the safety of staff and patients, but our play workers are still providing fun and distraction for children in our hospitals.

Fran Watson, Senior Play Worker said: All of the team have adapted brilliantly and have always made sure to put our patients first as well as supporting the parents/carers of the patients. The team have been extremely flexible to adapt to the on-going changes that the pandemic has bought to us.

“Having the Burton Team come to work with us has been a real breath of fresh air. We’ve all helped each other and it has been one team effort.”
