Sepsis Support Group goes from strength to strength

Sepsis Support Group

Our sepsis survivor support group continues to grow with 25 people who have been affected by sepsis at our last meeting. The group facilitated by nurses from UHDB and the UK Sepsis Trust offers the opportunity for sepsis survivors to share their experience and support one another.

Recovery from sepsis usually lasts between six and 18 months and can include significant physical, emotional and psychological challenges. At our most recent group participants shared their experiences including coping with hair loss, flash backs and memory loss, each are common following sepsis. More information on sepsis recovery can be found on the UK Sepsis Trust website

Fiona Bradley, UHDB Critical Care Outreach Nurse said: "Listening to the stories of those who attended the support group, resonated with patients that have suffered a Critical Illness. I am honoured to have been invited, as I see this as a much needed service.

"Participants can share experiences, so that we as healthcare professionals, can deliver high standards of care. Hoping to improve patients experiences and by extending a support network, participants are provided a safe environment to voice personal concerns."

Duncan Cameron UHDB Transformation Lead said: "What is amazing about the participants is their courage to share their experience not only to help the others in the room but for those yet to be affected by sepsis. The feedback is so valuable and we will work with our fellow health providers from GPs to the ambulance service to improve pathways for patients with sepsis.

"This includes more information on discharge from hospital and members of the group sharing their stories with clinical teams so they can reflect on works well and what could be improved from a patients perspective."
