#TeamUHDB imaging department selected to share successful training programme at national event
The Imaging and Radiology department at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton were selected to attend the UK's largest Imaging and Oncology event to present their research on the approach used to train 85% of the newly recruited CT-specialist radiographers at the Trust to full competency within 10 weeks.
From January 2022 until January 2024, UHDB welcomed 99 diagnostic radiographers and 34% of this group joined the CT department. The comprehensive programme helped the team train 85% of CT radiographers to a competent standard within 10 weeks, including completing mandatory training, learning local policy and rules, and practical training. This approach resulted in increased confidence among trainees, while also reducing patient waiting times for diagnostic appointments.
The event is attended by oncology and imaging professionals across the country and is a forum to display and share cutting edge research and practice-based content to multi-disciplinary audiences. Attendees can access more than 100 curated sessions focused on innovation, technology, and service delivery from industry partners.
Federica Palma, lead author for the study and CT Continued Professional Development and Education Superintendent Radiographer at the Trust said "It is important to take pride for the job we do and the role we play in the lives of our patients and in relation to our teams whilst staying updated on the latest available innovations. Furthermore, it's a chance to connect with other professionals. Finally, now we have the chance to bring back and share with our teams all the learning and the ideas we gathered during the event."
Edozie Iweka, Advanced Practice Radiographer added, ''Our representation showcases an evidence of improved research activity and culture in the imaging department; evidence of audits and service evaluations centred at improving patient services within departments; and enables the Trust to share widely with other imaging and oncology professionals across the world on initiatives and researches conducted locally such as disseminating best practices.''
