UHDB marks Black History Month 2023
We are delighted to be celebrating our Black colleagues and communities - and their invaluable contribution to our organisation and our society. As a Trust, we are deeply committed to continuously developing an organisation that is fair, diverse and representative of those we serve.
Throughout this month, we are working with UHDB's EMBRACE Staff Network to share stories and information, deliver events, and launch new organisational initiatives to demonstrate our commitment to ensuring racial equality and standing up for anti-racist values.
In addition, this year's special theme is 'Saluting our Sisters' - highlighting the crucial role that black women have played in shaping history, inspiring change, and building communities.
Message from EMBRACE Staff Network
"October is a month which serves as a reminder for us all to recognise and celebrate Black history, the future, and the accomplishments and contributions of people of Black heritage to the world.
"My wish and hope in observing the BHM is that one day, we will not need to have a dedicated month to celebrating success and contributions of the Black heritage - and have this across the whole year.
"This year, in support of #BHM2023, we're hosting information stands at every one of our hospital sites throughout the month, as well as taking action to enhance equality between people of all ethnicities both working at and visiting our organisation.
"This will include the exciting #SeeMeFirst campaign, a staff-led initiative to call on colleagues to commit to standing up against all forms of racism and discrimination in our organisation - the full details of which we will announce later this month.
"In addition, we are working with our Freedom To Speak Up (FTSU) teams to engage with colleagues about promoting conversations around racial equality and anti-racism, and how this can be improved across every part of our organisation.
"As EMBRACE network lead, I am proud of the efforts and contributions the Black and Asian Minority Ethnic (BME) colleagues are making towards the goal of making the UHDB a diverse organisation where everyone can bring themselves to work. We will continue to grow and work together with allies and other staff networks to ensure we achieve this goal".
