UHDB proud to have two colleagues recognised in Queen’s birthday honours

Honours 2022 - Latest News

This week marks the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and while some will be celebrating with bunting and cake, two of our UHDB staff members will be getting a special nod from the Queen herself in her birthday honours.

We are so proud to announce that among those receiving special accolades are two of our very own colleagues.

Dr Andrew Goddard, consultant gastroenterologist at UHDB and president of Royal College of Physicians, has been knighted for services to health and social care, while Maura Teager has been awarded an MBE Honour for Services to Nursing and the community of Derby’ over the last 50 years.

Dr Goddard, who will be awarded a knighthood, has been recognised as one of the UK’s leading gastroenterologists and has been praised for his ‘outstanding’ leadership during the pandemic, helping unite all parts of the system, while continuing to provide care for Covid-19 patients.

He is the first president of the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) from the East Midlands and has been a strong advocate for workforce development, diversity and inclusion and reduction in health inequalities.

Dr Goddard said: “I'm completely humbled by this honour as all the work I have been involved with over the past 20 years has involved so many others.

“I have been so very fortunate to work with many brilliant and inspirational people in my career, some of whom are sadly no longer with us. I hope their contributions are seen in what we have achieved together: this honour would not have been possible without their work, love and support.”

Dr Magnus Harrison, Interim CEO at UHDB, said Dr Goddard “provided a voice for frontline NHS staff” during the pandemic.

He said: “I am delighted that Dr Goddard’s work has been recognised in this way and I know that his achievements will have a positive impact for other physicians and patients for many years to come.

“Dr Goddard provided a voice for frontline NHS staff at a national level during the pandemic and has been an advocate for delivering exceptional patient care throughout. His dedication to diversity and inclusion has been exemplary and his positive manner and incredible leadership really epitomises our UHDB values.”

Also receiving a prestigious award is Maura Teager who has had a long and distinguished career serving the people of Derbyshire for the past five decades in roles that include nurse, midwife, volunteer, governor, NHS board member and Director of Nursing.

She has been a UHDB governor for the last five years and was elected by her peers as lead governor.

She said “This MBE is not about me, as I don’t feel it can be about one individual. It’s about the role models I’ve met and the many people I’ve walked alongside – patients and their families, colleagues, and of course my family, they have all challenged and inspired me.

“The NHS has played a huge part throughout my life and never more so than now and I would like to sincerely recognise the huge sacrifices that so many have made to keep services going so well during the pandemic and also the ongoing challenges that our staff in health and social care continue face”.

Kathy McLean OBE, is the Chair at UHDB and has known Maura for over twenty years.

She congratulated her on the MBE and said: “Maura always puts patients and populations at the heart of everything she does, and her influence is wider than her specific roles. I am delighted that other people appreciate Maura and value her and her work like we do.”
