UHDB surgical team hosting this year's national surgical congress

Surgical Congress

University Hospitals of Derby and Burton (UHDB) colleagues are hosting this year's surgical congress meeting led by the Association of Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgeons (ALSGBI) after leading the way nationally in robotic surgery for specialist abdominal wall hernia and complex pancreatic and biliary procedures.

The event is taking place on 5 and 6 November at Derby Arena and is a platform for surgeons across the country, USA and Europe to showcase their innovative work in using robotics in the surgical field to improve the quality of patient care and deliver better outcomes.

Mr Altaf Awan, and his colleague Mr Imran Bhatti are both consultant surgeons at UHDB and specialise in abdominal wall reconstruction and complex pancreatic and biliary surgery using the da Vinci robot.  Their expertise and knowledge have led to UHDB becoming a case observation centre for other surgeons to learn and train for such complex procedures.  Having this expertise means patients across the country can access this type of care closer to home instead of having to travel to hospitals further away.

At the congress, Mr Awan and Mr Bhatti will discuss the many benefits of these surgical procedures performed using the da Vinci robot, including faster recovery, reduced length of stay in hospital, reduced risk of complications and improved patient experience.

Chief Executive at UHDB, Stephen Posey, will give a welcome address at the conference to kickstart the two-day event.

Mr Awan said: "It is an honour to be able to host such a prestigious event for surgical colleagues from across the world. We are delighted to be leading the way in robotic and laparoscopic innovation at UHDB and to be able to showcase that on such a platform is really exciting."
