UK-first service providing life-changing respiratory support

University Hospitals of Derby and Burton is now offering a pioneering new service aimed at improving the care offered to patients with respiratory conditions.

ImpACT+ (Improving Adult Respiratory Care Together) is the first service of its kind anywhere in the UK and provides comprehensive support to help prevent and treat all types of lung conditions, while also supporting newly diagnosed patients.

The innovative service supports patients at all points in their pathway and includes elements which are unique, such as identifying those most at risk of lung disease, running support groups for patients in non-healthcare based facilities and working with GP practices to identify the best course of treatment for complex patients.

It also allows patients access to existing respiratory services already run throughout Southern Derbyshire and Erewash; offering support for patients through specialist clinics in the community, dedicated phone lines and home visits, where clinically appropriate.

Patients in Southern Derbyshire and Erewash can be referred to ImpACT+ by any health professional to receive support for a range of different respiratory conditions, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma and bronchiectasis.

ImpACT+ Clinical Lead Dr Deepak Subramanian said: “We’re very proud to now be able to offer such a pioneering and unique service to the local community. It allows us to work with patients and their GP practice to ensure that they receive the right care for them close to their own homes and the support they need from those with specialist knowledge of their condition. Combining each of these different services is ambitious but we are absolutely delighted to be able to offer this service with the intention of improving the quality of life of our patients with respiratory conditions.”

The service was launched last month and builds on the continued success of other services run by the Trust, such as the Adult Respiratory Team, ImpACT Asthma and Home Oxygen.

As well as this, ImpACT+ is also helping patients manage their breathlessness through Pulmonary Rehabilitation sessions held within community locations in Southern Derbyshire, while the dedicated phone line has been expanded and renamed the Lung Line and is available for both patients and health care professionals seven days a week.

The multi-disciplinary team is made up Consultants, Respiratory Specialist Nurses, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Fitness Instructors and Administrators working at place level across Southern Derbyshire and Erewash.
