UHDB marks #Red4Research Day 2024 after a year of record-breaking successes
Today is #Red4Research Day, which highlights and celebrates all those who take part in, support, and deliver research - shining a spotlight on teams and individuals who are driving innovation in healthcare through their commitment to research.
Here at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust (UHDB), we are delighted to take part in today's celebrations and showcase just some of the groundbreaking research happening across our hospitals.
To mark this special occasion, many of our dedicated research staff will proudly wear red today to recognise the advancements they are making in their work, all with the goal of improving patient care and enhancing the overall experience for the communities we serve. In addition, the front of Royal Derby Hospital will be illuminated in red from tonight and throughout the weekend, symbolising our unwavering commitment to research and innovation.
Research is at the heart of progress within the NHS. By integrating research into everyday care, NHS trusts like ours ensure that patients benefit from the latest medical advances. Clinical trials not only lead to new treatments but also drive innovations that improve care quality and efficiency and ultimately save lives.
At UHDB, research is integral to delivering Exceptional Care Together, and we remain committed to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in healthcare.

Our record-breaking year in research and innovation
The last year has been a standout for research at UHDB, with more than 7,200 patients recruited to clinical trials - setting a new record for our organisation - as well as extensive grant successes totalling more than £9.5m.
From advancing emergency medicine to improving care for pregnant women and the elderly, our research trials represent the diversity and depth of research conducted at UHDB, with some of the key trials including:
- Group B Streptococcus (GBS3), which enrolled over 4,000 expectant mothers, contributing to vital work in preventing infections during childbirth.
- PRONTO, a study focused on sepsis diagnosis, recruited 1,558 participants, helping refine emergency care practices.
- CHARMER, which aims to support medication reviews for older adults, involved 892 participants, advancing elderly care.
- The CONSCOP 2 trial saw 165 patients contribute to research on reducing bowel cancer risk
Our research achievements extend beyond extensive patient participation, with our significant grant successes enabling groundbreaking studies across various fields that have powered our research innovation, including:
- A £2 million grant for the SCOOTT trial, exploring treatments for thumb osteoarthritis.
- £2.2 million for the MiFoot study, aimed at improving foot care for diabetes patients.
- £2.5 million for the M3 Research Programme, improving Type 2 diabetes care for young adults.
- £1.1 million for the iTraXS 3 study, testing a new sensor-equipped endotracheal tube.
- Almost £900,000 for the WISDOM study, developing AI to detect slow-healing surgical wounds.
- Almost £500,000 for research into an antibiotic-impregnated dialysis catheter.
On #Red4Research Day, we celebrate not only these accomplishments of the past year, but our ongoing commitment of everyone involved in research - and we look forward to seeing both our Royal Derby Hospital site and many of our talented, hard-working research colleagues wear red on this special occasion.
