Kind-hearted Kieran receives #TeamUHDB award for going above and beyond
A compassionate member of the Imaging Team has been presented with our latest Excellent Employee Award for the care and support he provided to a patient at Royal Derby Hospital.
The patient, who is also a member of #TeamUHDB, nominated Kieran Mansell, Radiography Assistant in the Imaging Department, for his sensitive approach at what was a very upsetting and stressful time for them.
After being sent for a scan at the Gynaecology Assessment Unit (GAU), Kieran made an instant impact on the patient through his calm, caring nature. The patient said: "Kieran took the time to explain what was happening, how long I may have to wait and kept checking in on me to make sure I was okay.
"He was so kind and considerate. It may seem small but when I was scared and going through a distressing time, those little things made a huge difference to my time in the hospital."
Kieran, who began his NHS career as a General Porter at Royal Derby Hospital, has quickly developed into an Imaging Porter. This ignited a spark within Kieran, and he decided to pursue a career in Imaging and was overjoyed when a position became available as Radiography Assistant, which involves him obtaining blood samples and cannulating patients within obstetric, MRI, GAU and general ultrasound.
After being surprised with his award, Kieran said he works hard to ensure he is putting the Trust values of Compassion, Openness and Excellence into practice every day: "It is important to show good quality care and empathy towards every single patient, and also to keep smiling, even on a rainy day!
"I'm so honoured to be receiving this award, I'm just doing my job, but it feels incredible to know I have made a difference to a patient's experience at our hospitals".
Amanda Rawlings, Executive Chief People Officer, presented Kieran with his award and said: "I am delighted to be able to present you with the Excellent Employee Award - this is so well deserved and it's great when our patients recognise and appreciate the exceptional care that our colleagues provide.
"The fact they have taken the time to nominate you during at such a difficult time for them, is a testament of the impression you left with them of your compassion and dedication to our patients.
"Our colleagues go above and beyond for our patients daily and it's important that we recognise this in any way that we can."
