Cancer navigator welcomed to Gynaecology Oncology team
We are very excited to welcome Kay Doyle, Cancer Navigator, to our Gynaecology Oncology team.
The role of the cancer navigator involves being the first point of contact for patients and their loved ones, offering support and guidance through their entire cancer journey from diagnosis, through treatment, to living with and beyond cancer.
Kay will offer one-to-one, practical and emotional support to patients, their carers and families about their non-medical needs, such as worries about money or feelings of anxiety.
Kay said: “I have been part of the NHS for more than 30 years, mostly in admin-based roles across several areas, including Ear Nose Throat, Dermatology and, for the last 6 years, as Admin Team Leader in Gynaecology Outpatients. I even did a short stint in the hospital kitchens in my teens! I'm really looking forward to being part of the Gynaecology Oncology team and having much more contact with patients to support them through their treatment plans.”
By using tools such as holistic needs assessments, navigators can help to explore what is important to a patient’s physical and emotional wellbeing at a particular time. This then allows the signposting or referral to local activities and resources. Kay will help to find support provided by other organisations, charities, and local authorities, ensuring every cancer patient receives a personalised care and support plan.
No matter where patients are in their cancer pathway, patients and their loved ones can benefit from Kay’s support.
Claire Hill, Team Leader said: “We are so happy to have Kay joining us, she will be a great asset to the team, working collaboratively with the CNS at Derby and Burton along with other healthcare professionals to help create a positive experience and streamlined service for all of our ladies diagnosed with a gynaecological cancer”.
