Caring Medical Secretary Kayleigh surprised with Patient Hero Award

Kayleigh Murfin patient hero award

A caring Medical Secretary has been presented with a Monthly Making a Difference Award for the invaluable support she offers to cancer patients.

Kayleigh Murfin, Patient Pathway Team Leader in the Oncology department at Royal Derby Hospital, received the Patient Hero Award after a patient nominated her for the help Kayleigh offered her during a difficult time.

The patient has contacted Kayleigh for assistance on multiple occasions and has always received helpful and timely responses, which motivated them to nominate Kayleigh for an award to recognise her compassionate approach.

The nomination said: "Each time I have dealt with Kayleigh, she has made it so easy and seamless.

"Kayleigh always replied to me the same day, explained the process, and followed up with me when she said she would. Her efficiency has meant less anxiety and stress for me, which means so much. She is an asset to Royal Derby Hospital".

The patient continued to say they submitted their nomination "to show how much Kayleigh's actions have meant to me as an individual”.

Reflecting on receiving her award, Kayleigh said: "I feel very grateful to have received the Patient Hero Award. I've worked in the Trust for five years and the last couple of years have been challenging for many reasons, but this has lifted my spirits.

"I know that many patients face journeys that are hard to navigate, and I feel very proud that I have been able to help a patient during a difficult time."

Amanda Rawlings, Executive Chief People Officer, presented Kayleigh with her award and said: "It's clear that compassion is at the forefront of everything you do, and you've been able to help a patient through a very difficult time and that is invaluable.

"When people are in that scenario, it's so kind of them to take the time to submit a nomination to thank the people that have helped them."
