Christmas miracle ends 6 month hospital stay for 20 year-old patient

Sam Hine being discharged

A 20 year-old from Derby has been discharged just in time for Christmas with his family after a 30 week stay at the Royal Derby Hospital.

Sam Hine, 20, was first admitted to hospital in May where he was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis. After a just under seven months in hospital, including spending time on our Intensive Care Unit and an operation that saved his life, he is over the moon to be going home for Christmas.

Sam said: “I’m excited to go home to my family but also quite nervous – being in hospital for this long has been a bit of a safety blanket for me. I really have received the best care here from all of the staff; they have made me feel incredibly safe and confident to continue my care at home.

“Going home is the best Christmas present I could have asked for - I don’t need new trainers, I’m just happy to be able to spend quality time with my family again!”

Sam, who worked in Security before the pandemic hit, hopes to return to University of Salford next September where he is studying Criminology in hope to become a Police Officer in the future.

Sam’s Mum, Gill said: “After such a long journey, we’re so happy to finally have our son come home to us. His return is thanks to the amazing care and support he received from the staff at the Royal Derby Hospital.

“It is going to be a lot of hard work when he gets home, but it is a journey we will tackle together.

“We are so grateful to all of the staff who have helped Sam in his journey to getting him home for Christmas including; Intensive Care Unit, Step Down Unit, Ward 305 and Ward 304.”

Senior Sister Amie Darby who cared for Sam throughout some of his stay said: “It’s great to see Sam finally walk out of the doors on Ward 304 after being with us for so long. I’m really proud of him and every member of staff that has helped get him to this point”
