"Family" on Royal Derby Hospital's Ward 408 recognised for providing nurturing environment for student nurses
A ward team has been recognised for going the extra mile to help train and develop student nurses through their compassionate approach to coaching and education.
The team on Royal Derby Hospital's Ward 408 were singled out by a student nurse who spent time on the ward during their training for their dedication to nurturing students to "work to the best of their ability", making them feel incredibly welcome and valued in the process.
Following the glowing nomination, Chief Executive, Stephen Posey, presented the team was with his latest CEO Award in recognition of passionate approach towards enhancing the experience of students and improving patient care.
To help support nurses and other colleagues, the ward has developed a 'student board' with many resources and key learning opportunities, allowing each colleague to research and teach a range of different topics, including mouth care and specific elements of care for cardiology patients.
The nomination added that: "Ward 408 just amplifies the fact that good nurses bloom from good teaching, and they truly understand that we are the future workforce.
"I have never felt so valued as a student. It is wards like this that reinforce and sometimes reignite your passion for nursing, and I have found that this ward is a family."
Marie Jackson, Senior Sister on the ward, heaped further praise on her team - almost exactly one year on since they were presented with a Team UHDB Award.
She said: "I am really proud of the team for the support they give to our students. It's so important that we invest the time and effort into their training as they are the future of the NHS workforce. Our students are always really good, and they always want to come back to work with us which is lovely to see.
"It's actually a year since we were presented with a Team UHDB Award for the support the staff gave to each other during a challenging period, so to be recognised again for the support we as a team are offering to others is a testament to everyone."
CEO Stephen Posey expressed his delight at being able to recognise Ward 408's commitment to education, and said: "The team's focus on nurturing students to be the best they can be embodies our Trust value of excellence to the highest degree, and it is a pleasure to be able to formally recognise their efforts today.
"This type of learning and teamwork and supports our ambition to make UHDB an excellent place to work for every colleague so that, together, we can focus on making it a place where patients receive exceptional care."
