As our NHS reaches its historic 75th birthday, we want to recognise the vital role that international recruitment has played in shaping the NHS into what it is today - and how it affects our future. 

Here at UHDB, internationally-recruited colleagues across our organisation play a vital role in delivering exceptional patient care. We are hugely privileged that talented people from across have colleagues from over 100 different countries, recently captured in our One World, One #TeamUHDB flag that was hoisted at our Royal Derby Hospital (RDH) site earlier this year >

We caught up with some of our most recent internationally-recruited midwives for NHS 75 - to hear about their journey to UHDB and their motivation for providing maternity care for our communities.

"I feel very fortunate" - Sharon on working for the NHS since 1976 for NHS 75 celebrations

A member of #TeamUHDB says they feel "very thankful" to have played a part in helping patients across Derbyshire receive the care they needed during her 47-year career as we mark the NHS' 75th anniversary.

Sharon Babb has worked in a number of roles administrative roles in arranging patient appointments and consultations during her NHS career, which spans five decades - something she says she feels "very grateful to have worked to benefit our patients" for so long.

Long standing volunteers who have given a combined total of 460 years of their time to helping others across UHDB have been honoured at a special ceremony.

The volunteers, whose service spans from 5 years to an incredible 50 years of service were thanked for their efforts and awarded certificates and pin badges to commemorate their time here.

Andrew Selby, Director of Estates and Facilities Management, spoke at the event and called the volunteers 'heroes' saying they are vital to the Trust as he provided certificates to volunteers with a total of 460 years of volunteering service.

A midwife who has spent 47 years working in the NHS says she would "do it all over again" if she had the chance, as she reflected on her career as we mark the NHS' 75th anniversary.

Carol Adcock, 65, currently works as a midwife in Fetal Medicine at Royal Derby Hospital, and has known from an early age that she wanted to work in healthcare in some way:

Medical Museum at Royal Derby Hospital opens to celebrate 75 years of NHS

To mark the 75th anniversary of the NHS, Derby and Burton Hospitals Charity is hosting a pop-up 'Medical Museum' to celebrate the history of healthcare in Derbyshire and Staffordshire outside of Royal Derby Hospital. The exhibition will be open to the public from Tuesday 4 - Friday 7 July, and provides a glimpse into the archives of healthcare through the years, with artefacts dating back as far as the early 1800s on display.

There are resurfacing road works taking place from Monday 19 June to Friday 7 July on Derby's Uttoxeter New Road, from the Royal Derby Hospital roundabout to the Kingsway junction - affecting those visiting our Royal Derby Hospital site.

This will be taking place from Monday to Friday - with no weekend working - between 9.30am and 3.30pm.

If you are travelling to Royal Derby Hospital, please ensure you plan your journey to allow for possible delays. If you have an appointment at the site, please give yourself extra time to get there.

UHDB marks 75th anniversary of Windrush

Today marks the 75th anniversary of the arrival of HMS Empire Windrush. Those on board were the first of many to arrive in the UK from the Caribbean, in what has become known as the Windrush Generation. These individuals arrived seeking new opportunities in a country that was in need of workers to rebuild following the devastation of World War II.

Royal Derby Hospital team shortlisted for national award for dedicated cancer unit

Colleagues who are leading the way in innovation that is helping improve the service for cancer patients are celebrating after being shortlisted for a national award.

The team in the Combined Triage Assessment Unit (CTAU) at Royal Derby Hospital have made the shortlist for the category of Urgent and Emergency Care Safety Initiative of the Year, for their innovative and compassionate work that saw them free up a whole inpatient ward while also improving safety for patients receiving treatment for cancer.

Joy for volunteer Julie who is regional champion for prestigious NHS Parliamentary Awards

Julie Hammond, a long-serving volunteer and shop manager of League of Friends at Queen's Hospital Burton, is a Midlands regional champion for the prestigious NHS Parliamentary Awards.

Julie, who has dedicated 14 years to volunteering and fundraised more than £45,000 for charity, has been named regional champion for The Volunteer Award after being nominated by Kate Kniveton, MP for Burton and Uttoxeter.

Stunning new artwork unveiled for young patients to enjoy in Children’s Outpatients Department

Children and young patients who attend Royal Derby Hospital's Children's Outpatients Department will now be able to enjoy a colourful and calm environment, thanks to a stunning transformation.

The makeover was created as part of a collaboration between charity-funded arts programme, Air Arts, Derby & Burton Hospitals Charity and the hospitals League Of Friends Group, to create a sense of calm for patients moving around the hospital.

Advice to patients during junior doctor industrial action: 14 - 17 June 2023

From 7am on Wednesday 14 June 2023, some junior doctors across the NHS will take part in industrial action which is planned to last for 72 hours, concluding at 7am on Saturday 17 June 2023.

We have put extensive plans in place to minimise the impact on our patients and communities. We will prioritise emergency, urgent and critical care but there will be disruption to some services.

Kind-hearted staff have made the dreams of a patient with cancer come true after arranging for him to marry his long-time partner in a special ceremony attended by their loved ones.

Ant Hadfield and his now wife, Mandi, met 14 years ago in a tattoo shop, but were desperate to become man and wife as soon as possible after Ant became ill in March this year.

New mum thanks midwifery team who supported her through difficult pregnancy

A new mum whose baby was found to have a two-vesselled cord at the 20- week scan has thanked the brilliant team at Queen's Hospital Burton for their support and reassurance during her pregnancy.

Chelsee Mosson, from Rugeley, said she enjoyed a straightforward pregnancy up until the 20-week mark. During a routine scan the sonographer found that her unborn son had a two-vesselled cord, a condition in which the baby has just one artery and one vein connecting to the umbilical cord instead of two arteries and one vein.

Patient thanks 'inspirational team' who went above and beyond for him after he suffered stroke

Colleagues who provide care for stroke patients have been hailed as 'inspirational' by a patient for providing compassionate care during challenging circumstances.

Ward 4 at Queen's Hospital Burton is a hybrid ward which offers stroke rehabilitation, as well as providing support to patients with other medical conditions, meaning they see a range of different dependencies on a daily basis.

Patient thanks off-duty colleague who saved his life following cardiac arrest

A patient who suffered a cardiac arrest while watching a cricket match has thanked the off-duty UHDB colleague whose quick thinking and actions saved his life. 76-year-old Chris Sexton was enjoying a day out watching games at his beloved Ockbrook and Borrowash Cricket Club on Saturday 20 May when he started to feel unwell.

Sally celebrated for helping around 100 vulnerable patients receive Covid-19 vaccinations

A behind the scenes member of #TeamUHDB has been celebrated for the vital role they played in ensuring clinically vulnerable patients were able to receive their Covid-19 vaccinations over the past two years. Sally Maine, Service Manager for Outpatients, played a pivotal role in implementing a specialist vaccination clinic for patients who had been identified as being at risk of having an allergic reaction to the vaccination.

Family of UHDB colleague who passed away thank staff for exceptional care with mural tribute

The family of a UHDB colleague who passed away on Florence Nightingale Community Hospital's End of Life ward have visited the ward to see a poignant garden mural they helped fundraise for.

Ann Moran, secretary within Specialist Medicine at UHDB, sadly passed away two years ago. Her husband Phil and their son Stephen met with Ward 2 staff to thank them for the care they provided to Ann in her final weeks.
