Children's Occupational Therapy

Our Children's Occupational Therapy team provide assessments and treatment to patients aged 0 to 18 years old, at the Derbyshire Children's Hospital, in the Royal Derby Hospital.

To optimise a child's or young person's ability to participate in daily activities at home, school and in leisure or play, we provide support and interventions for their physical, cognitive, emotional or social needs within their environment.  

We aim to enable and empower the child or young person with their family, to manage or adapt to challenges posed by illness, injury or condition, to improve their function, health and wellbeing.

Services we provide

We provide assessments and treatment to both inpatients and outpatients, at the Royal Derby Hospital. 

Inpatients are seen where there is a change in usual level of function or mobility, following illness, injury or surgery, for rehab, splinting or discharge planning.

Outpatients are seen with acute or chronic conditions, that impact on function, pain or quality of life.   

The range of acute and chronic conditions seen includes (but is not limited to):

  • orthopaedic conditions (non-surgical and post-surgery)
  • hands and upper limb conditions
  • neurological conditions
  • rheumatology
  • long covid
  • chronic fatigue
  • chronic pain
  • functional neurological disorder

Assessments and intervention

Types of assessments and intervention may include:

  • assessment for managing daily activities
  • advise with fine motor activities
  • condition management and education
  • provision of off the shelf or custom-made splints/ braces
  • fatigue management and pacing advise
  • contact with school to accommodate a child's needs
  • advise on sleep

We work closely with partner agencies to ensure person-centred and coordinated intervention which includes contact with community therapy, schools, social care teams.
