How to obtain clinical microbiology advice

From 8:00am to 8:00pm, Monday to Friday (excluding Bank Holidays), please telephone switchboard to be directed to the on-call Consultant Microbiologist, or directly telephone the Microbiology Call Tree on:

General enquiries

General enquiries for clinical advice should be made between 8:00 am and 8:00 pm Monday - Friday unless it is urgent.

Junior staff should discuss the problem with senior members of their own team and consult the antibiotic guidelines before seeking consultant microbiologist advice if possible.

Please make sure you have an accurate and full history, including any recent antibiotic treatment, before phoning for advice.

Contact the on-call consultant microbiologist via switchboard.

Please make sure that before calling you are aware of the patient’s medical history, including details of any antibiotic therapy over the past 2 weeks and the results of any microbiological investigations.

The Microbiologists are in the laboratory on Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday mornings but are then on-call from home. They do not have access to microbiology results from home.
