Elective Hub
Patients visiting hospital for planned, non-urgent care, or 'elective care', will visit our Elective Hub.
After their procedure, patients may be able return home on the same day, or may be transferred to a hospital ward.
Pre-operation information for patients
You will have been given a date and time to visit our Elective Hub for your planned surgery.
When you arrive at our department, you will be asked to sit in our waiting area. Friends or relatives will not be able to accompany you due to limited spaces, however, if you feel you need to be accompanied, you can discuss this with the nurse in charge.
A nurse will help you to settle and take your blood pressure.
A surgical team will attend, and a surgeon will discuss your planned surgery and make sure you give consent for your surgery to go ahead.
An Anaesthetist is a doctor who 'puts patients to sleep' and will discuss with you their plans for before, during, and after your surgery.
While you are waiting for your surgery, you can have small sips of water (around 170ml per hour). Small plastic cups are available, so please ask a member of staff if you would like a drink.
You may be asked to give a sample of your blood. If this is required, a phlebotomist will discuss this with you. If you require any other tests before your surgery, a member of staff will discuss this with you.
If your planned surgery involves staying overnight, a pharmacist may discuss your medication history with you.
When theatre is ready to operate, you will be asked to change into a hospital gown. Your belongings will be locked in a secure locker, and a porter will take you for your surgery.
After surgery, your belongings will be returned to you.
Please be aware that you may be waiting several hours before your planned surgery. Surgery hours are from 8:30am - 7:30pm.
