Why join us in our Children's wards?

Puffin Ward is an inpatient ward, and we care for children aged from 0-18 years with a wide variety of medical, surgical, and mental health needs.

We have 12 admitting beds which consists of two bays, and nine cubicle options. Three of these cubicles are off-set from the ward and called Teen Pride. One cubicle has been specially adapted to safely accommodate young people with complex behaviours.

As a ward, we are passionate about staff wellbeing and pride ourselves on outstanding patient care. We work closely alongside other members of the multi-disciplinary team including the Medical team, Education team, Positive Behaviour team, Eating Disorder team, Kids In Their Environment (KITE) team, and many more.

Our staff team is made up of a senior sister, three Band 6 sisters, a team of Band 5 nurses, a nursing associate, and Band 2 and three health care assistants (HCAs).

We have recently welcomed two internationally trained nurses who are already like part of the Puffin Ward family.

Dolphin Ward

Dolphin Ward is a 12 bedded medical and emergency surgical ward, catering for children aged 0-18 years with a wide variety of acute and chronic medical conditions.

The ward is made up of nurses, HCAs, receptionists and our modern housekeeper, and we all work closely with a huge number of wonderful teams to ensure children get the best care. These include doctors, physiotherapists, safeguarding, mental health workers, pharmacists, dieticians plus many more.

The ward consists of eight cubicles and six bay beds. Each bed space has a pull-out bed for one parent/carer to stay overnight. We are also very lucky to have a sensory playroom for all our patients to use, and an amazing play team to keep our patients entertained and supported, whether this be through play, craft or distraction.

Sunflower Ward

Sunflower Ward is our elective ward caring for patients from birth to 18 years.

We care for patients that are having elective procedures ranging from general surgery to dental extractions under anaesthesia. We also have trauma patients and emergency patients from all specialities. Most of our patients are pre-assessed via telephone prior to admission, and we can arrange an on-site visit for those that require more support preoperatively. We also care for patients that require admitting for procedures such as blood transfusions, vaccinations and food challenges, sedated scans, and botulinum injections and jaundice checks.

Our team is made of registered nurses, healthcare support workers, the Play team and Administration team.

Ward 1

Ward 1 is Queen’s Hospital Burton's friendly and welcoming children’s ward, dedicated to providing children and young people (and their families) with the best possible hospital experience for both inpatient stays and day-case procedures.

Our friendly team of medical, nursing and support staff are all specialist-trained, and put the child and family at the heart of all we do.

We have both indoor and outdoor play areas for all patients to use, and can be flexible with regards to visiting, with one parent/carer being welcome to stay overnight at the side of their child if necessary.
